Workplace Stress As The Epidemic of the 21st Century: How to Fight It?

Workplace Stress is an issue that has become the illness of the 21st century. It causes people do inadequate things. Still there is no some pill to take to deal with the stress once and for all.

Stress problem is so serious these days it causes people look for new jobs. Fortunately there are enough sources and online tools like the LinkedIn headline for job seekers that have been helping to get hired for a position that implies less of mental effort and leaves room for daily relaxation.

Many people like to think of the stress as a challenge and motivation. But before you know it, too much stress can translate into a heart attack. Such disorders as hypertension, obesity, addictions, anxiety and depression have been observed at the workplace.

  • Japan called the 21st century a century of stress and came up with many ways to deal with it.   • Unlike the Asians, Indians prefer to get rid of stress with a smile. The first club of laughter appeared at the end of the twentieth century and successfully practiced foolery, making faces and continuous laughter. This project has become very popular, and some companies are conducting laughter therapy at the beginning of the work day.

The scary part is that American employers have little knowledge of how to help their workers deal with stress. The American Psychological Association’s annual Stress Survey has shown that only 36% organizations provide sufficient resources to help employees manage stress. So, if you don’t want to end up with Major Depression or Schizophrenia like some stressed-out people do, look at the ways you single-handedly can fight the daily stress.

Constant feel of stress has caused people to divide into four groups. There are:

  1. The stress-proof
  2. The stress-unstable
  3. The stress –trained
  4. The stress-retarded

The first are the ones whose brain doesn’t freeze, but instead functions better. The second ones tend to fall into panic and throw tantrum when there is a change in the plan. People from the third group are basically ready for change, but they need time to adjust to the situation. Finally the forth ones are the hardest to budge.

Knowing the type you are will help you find the most suitable technique of fighting stress.


  • If you can’t change the situation, change your attitude towards it. Look at what happened from a different angle to probably find the benefits.
  • Do not overload yourself. Avoid constant pressure. Try not to postpone the completion of many important tasks on the last day.
  • Take regular breaks at work. Make sure you take short breaks for your brain throughout the day.
  • Break up large projects into parts. If a large project seems impossible, don’t fear, just break it into a large number of single-step tasks and do them one at a time. Focus on doing each step separately, instead of multitasking.
  • Delegate responsibility. You don’t have to do everything. If there are people in the company who can cope with one of your tasks, why not let them.
  • Change your perception. Nothing good will come out if you keep complaining and being rude to people. Smile to colleagues, be polite and considerate, don’t isolate from people.

Psychologically Speaking on Workplace Stress


The hardest, yet the most effective way is to soothe your inner self.  Treat yourself to a simple breathing exercise. Progressive muscle relaxation or exercises to develop imaginative thinking are time-taking but will be more impact in the long run. The exercises will have a long-term effect on the circulatory system and neurochemical aspects of stress regulation.
